Sports fans tend to grumble a lot. It’s just the way of things that we like to complain, especially when things aren’t going our way.
However, there were some vociferous complaints about the action across the NBA regular season, with accusations that it was boring, particularly toward the tail end of the season.
There’s a whole can of worms to open there, from clear evidence of teams tanking to a sense that some teams were just too poor to compete.
But might we say that the early rounds of the Playoffs have injected a lot of life into the NBA? It’s been exhilarating so far, and what’s more, it is suggestive that there is so much more to come. Here are three things that have caught our eye so far:
Salivating Over a Spurs-Thunder Western Conference Showdown
It’s not cast in stone yet, but the two best teams across the regular season could well meet in the Western Conference Finals. There are so many subplots to the showdown: The two best records in the league.
Two players, SGA and Victor Wembanyama, backed most heavily in the NBA MVP betting. One team is the defending champion, the other is coming up like a rocket to challenge.
In a way, it’s a pity that it could not be the Finals match-up, but it’s going to be fascinating to see who comes out on top in the West. And make no mistake about it: whoever wins will go to the Finals as the red-hot favorite.
A Return to the Top Table for the Celtics
We happen to love it when teams grow into their form through the Playoffs. We wouldn’t say that the Boston Celtics are quite there yet, but what has transpired over the past few weeks is that neutral fans, as well as sportsbooks, are starting to give them grudging respect.
At the time of writing, the Celtics are the clear favorites for the Eastern Conference, and not many of us thought that would be the case a few months ago.
The team has the pieces, including the Tatum-Brown axis that delivered the championship in 2024, as well as big contributions from players like Derrick White and Payton Pritchard. If momentum is what it takes to win championships, this is it.
An Unlikely Underdog Story in Los Angeles
Social media has been littered with posts talking about LeBron James this past week, many of which illustrate how he has won more Playoff games than some franchises have managed in their entire history.
Anyway, James has stepped up and rolled back the years in the absence of teammates like the injured Luka Doncic. If the Lakers get past the Rockets (the Lakers lead 3-1) at the time of writing, it will likely be the Thunder in the Conference Semi-Finals.
A tall order for King James, then, but he is showing how clutch he is. It’s weird describing him as an underdog, but here we are. And you know what? It’s exciting for everyone except his (vocal) haters.
