The Tampa Bay Rays are heading to the World Series after defeating the Cleveland Guardians 7–3 Monday night, closing the American League Championship Series in six games.
Freddy Peralta’s pitching and two-run homers from Junior Caminero and Yandy Diaz proved decisive. Tampa Bay will face the Milwaukee Brewers, with both franchises seeking a first championship.
As Pinstripe Alley’s Tuesday recap detailed, the Rays finished the series with a 4–2 advantage, overcoming Cleveland’s early resistance before securing their place in the season’s final round.
Richie Palacios gave Tampa Bay its first separation with a two-run double in the second inning. Jonny DeLuca’s sacrifice fly added another run in the third.
Cleveland had opportunities to interrupt Peralta’s outing, including an early threat with two runners aboard and nobody out. A lineout and double play left that chance unconverted.
Chase DeLauter opened the sixth with a double and scored on Nathaniel Lowe’s single, ending Peralta’s night. The Guardians had finally scored, but still needed a larger response.
Caminero supplied another damaging blow with his seventh-inning homer. According to Reuters’ game report, the drive was his first career postseason home run, extending Tampa Bay’s advantage.
The Guardians answered with two runs in the eighth to reduce the deficit to 5–3. Kevin Kelly struck out Brayan Rocchio with the bases loaded, preserving the lead.
Diaz’s two-run homer in the bottom half restored a four-run cushion. Bryan Baker retired Cleveland in order in the ninth, completing the victory and ending the series.
Peralta earned ALCS Most Valuable Player honors after winning Games 2 and 6 and also contributing in relief. He allowed one run across 12 innings during the series.
The Associated Press reported that Peralta finished with 5 1/3 innings, five hits allowed and one run surrendered, following six scoreless innings in his earlier start.
His next assignment carries a personal connection: Milwaukee was his first major league team. After moving through the Mets to Tampa Bay, he could face former teammates.
That pitching contribution complemented an offense that created distance in different ways. Early run manufacturing established control before the late home runs supplied protection against Cleveland’s attempted comeback.
For the Guardians, the turning point was their inability to capitalize fully on scoring chances. Threatening innings mattered less than the outs Tampa Bay found when pressure increased.
The Rays have now reached three World Series, following appearances in 2008 and 2020. Those trips ended with defeats against Philadelphia and the Los Angeles Dodgers, respectively.
Milwaukee’s previous appearance came in 1982, when the Brewers still played in the American League. They lost that championship series in seven games to the St. Louis Cardinals.
Game 1 is scheduled for Friday, October 23, in Milwaukee. The matchup guarantees a first championship for one of the two clubs, adding significance beyond this season’s pennants.
Neither team needs history alone for motivation. Their meeting pairs the top regular-season team from each league, with another four victories required to finish the job.
Tampa Bay’s clincher showed the combination it will carry forward: effective starting pitching, timely extra-base hits and a bullpen that escaped the final serious threat before closing decisively.
