Tottenham claimed their first Premier League victory of the season Monday, beating Coventry City 3–1 as James Maddison marked his return to the starting lineup with a goal.
Omar Marmoush and Ben Davies also scored, lifting Spurs off the bottom and into 16th place. Dejan Kulusevski’s return provided another boost after a prolonged injury absence.
Sky Sports reported that the victory left Tottenham level with Coventry on six points, with the home side moving above its opponent on goal difference.
The result ended a six-match winless league start for Roberto De Zerbi’s team. Spurs had drawn three and lost three before finally taking all three points at home.
Maddison opened the scoring in the 14th minute against the club where he began his professional career, curling a shot into the top corner from outside the area.
It was his first competitive Tottenham start since May 2025. His contribution gave the hosts an early advantage on an evening featuring two significant returns from injury.
According to beIN Sports’ match report, Mohammed Kudus supplied the cutback for Maddison’s opener. Dominic Solanke subsequently had an effort ruled out for offside.
Coventry stayed within reach and equalized early in the second half through Jack Rudoni. His close-range finish made Tottenham work again for a result it badly needed.
The response came through Marmoush, whose curling finish restored the lead in the 58th minute. It was the forward’s first goal for Tottenham and changed the game’s direction.
Davies then removed the remaining uncertainty in the sixth minute of stoppage time. His low effort completed the scoring and secured the hosts’ long-awaited breakthrough in the league.
The Associated Press recap carried by WRAL described Coventry’s equalizer as a shot goalkeeper Antonín Kinský touched but could not keep out.
That setback made Tottenham’s second-half recovery especially valuable. Instead of allowing the equalizer to define the evening, the home side found two further goals to settle the contest.
Kulusevski appeared as a late substitute after 526 days away, receiving a warm reception. His involvement added to the significance of Maddison’s successful return to the starting team.
The three points improved Tottenham’s position immediately, although one victory leaves further work ahead. Coventry finished the evening one place below Spurs, in 17th, after the defeat.
Tottenham’s next league assignment is a trip to Chelsea on Saturday. The task now is to follow this breakthrough with another result while building on its returning players’ contributions.
