Vincent Kompany is receiving hospital care after collapsing while observing a Bayern Munich reserve-team training session Friday, with his coaching staff taking over first-team duties until further notice.

Bayern confirmed the incident in a club statement and said the 40-year-old head coach was undergoing thorough examinations. The club did not announce a timetable for his return.

The official update said Kompany would remain under medical care while his assistants oversee training and match activities, placing responsibility for Bayern’s immediate preparations with the existing coaching group.

Max Eberl, Bayern’s board member for sport, said Kompany’s health was the priority and pledged the necessary care, support and time for the coach to recover from the incident.

Sky Sports reported that Kompany’s condition was stable, citing Sky in Germany. Bayern’s own statement focused on the examinations and his continued medical care rather than providing a diagnosis.

The Associated Press reported that Kompany had recently been dealing with a viral infection, which had already affected his involvement in Bayern’s preparations earlier in the week.

Assistant coach Aaron Danks had discussed Kompany’s illness before the Arsenal game, saying medical staff had advised rest and that Bayern were monitoring his condition ahead of kickoff.

Bayern’s pre-match briefing identified Danks and René Maric as possible stand-ins if needed. The pair had also overseen the team against Paris Saint-Germain in last season’s semifinal.

He missed a training session and Tuesday’s pre-match news conference but returned to the dugout for Wednesday’s Champions League match against Arsenal, which finished 2-2 at the Allianz Arena.

Friday’s club statement did not identify the cause of the collapse. The previously reported illness therefore remains background to the update, rather than a confirmed explanation for what happened.

Bayern are scheduled to visit Freiburg in the Bundesliga on Sunday. The staff’s temporary responsibility extends to match activities as well as the training sessions leading into that fixture.

Bayern entered the week following a 6-1 Bundesliga victory over RB Leipzig. Their next league assignment takes them away from Munich while Kompany remains under care.

Manchester City also sent their best wishes to their former captain, according to Sky Sports, adding to the messages of support following Bayern’s confirmation that he was receiving treatment.
