Song was born on February 19, 1975, in Seoul, South Korea. However, he grew up in Gardena, California, and spent a year with his grandmother in Hawaii. He was raised by his older sister, who their elder brother raised. In an Interview for The Skateboard Mag, the skateboarder explained how his parents were insane to his neighbors. His parents had an unhealthy relationship, and they used to fight most of the time. Song claimed that he had to call the police on occasion as well.
His parents separated when he was 14 years old, and he started skateboarding during this period. His mother gifted him his first skateboard, and he was later sponsored by a skateboard shop named Sporting Ideas.
Song attended the 135th Street School in Gardena, known for its aggressive reputation. There he saw Mullen skating, and Rodney Mullen observed Song’s skills too.
Career
Song started skating at the age of 14 when he received a skateboard from his mother due to the high density of skateboarders in his neighborhood. Soon he was spotted by Rodney Mullen for his amazing skills, who invited him to join his business, Tensor, as a professional skateboarder. As a result, Song’s career took off.
After starting competing, Song attracted the attention of influential people in the sports industry, and so he was approached by several commercial art companies to appear in videos about skateboarding or products for skateboarders. In 1992, he signed a contract with World Industries, and they started supporting him.
As a result of the partnership, he took part in many of their projects, such as “Love Child,” which allowed him to train and compete at some of the most prestigious skate parks and competitions, significantly boosting his net worth.
Unfortunately, Song encountered a severe ankle injury while filming for his company. With no choice left, he decided to call it quits for some time.
