Early Life and Tennis Journey

Elise Mertens was born on November 17, 1995, in Leuven, Belgium. Her sister Lauren, now an airline pilot, put a racket in Elise’s hand at age four.

Mertens grew up idolizing fellow Belgians Justine Henin and Kim Clijsters. Her parents, Guido Mertens and Liliane Barbe, home-schooled both daughters so tennis training could fit around lessons.

She trained with the Belgian Federation in her early teens and later spent time at the Mouratoglou Academy in Paris. In 2015 she joined the Kim Clijsters Academy, staying there until it closed in 2022.

Mertens turned professional in 2013 and spent her first seasons grinding through the ITF circuit. She made her WTA Tour doubles debut at the 2015 Copa Colsanitas and her singles main-draw debut at ‘s-Hertogenbosch in 2016.

Her breakthrough came fast. She won the 2017 Hobart International as a qualifier, becoming the first qualifier to win a WTA title since 2016, and cracked the world’s top 100 for the first time.

Professional Tennis Career

The 2018 season made Mertens a household name in tennis. She reached the Australian Open semifinal, beating a top-five opponent along the way, and won three singles titles that year.

Her doubles career has been even more decorated. Mertens has captured 24 WTA doubles titles, six of them Grand Slams: the 2019 US Open and 2021 Australian Open with Aryna Sabalenka, the 2021 Wimbledon and 2024 Australian Open with Hsieh Su-wei, the 2025 Wimbledon Championships with Veronika Kudermetova, and the 2026 Australian Open with Zhang Shuai.

She reached world No. 1 in doubles on May 10, 2021, becoming just the third Belgian to top either ranking, after Henin and Clijsters. She has also won two WTA Finals doubles titles, in 2022 and 2025, both alongside Kudermetova.

In singles, Mertens has claimed 10 WTA titles and reached a career-high ranking of No. 12 in November 2018. Her best Grand Slam singles results are that 2018 Australian Open semifinal and back-to-back US Open quarterfinals in 2019 and 2020.

She has represented Belgium in the Billie Jean King Cup since 2017 and competed at the Tokyo Olympics in 2020. At her best, her flat, deep groundstrokes and elite return of serve make her one of the most consistent counterpunchers on tour.

Coach

Christopher Heyman, a former Belgian pro who reached a career-high ATP ranking of No. 258, has coached Mertens since 2023. He stepped into the role two weeks before that year’s US Open and has traveled with her ever since.

Before Heyman, Mertens worked with Robbe Ceyssens through 2021, then briefly with Simon Goffin, brother of ATP player David Goffin, in 2022. She has also worked with Dieter Kindlmann, who previously coached Maria Sharapova and Madison Keys.

Boyfriend

Mertens is in a relationship with Christopher Heyman, who doubles as her coach. The couple went public in July 2023 and now travel the tour together.

She has no children. Her parents, Guido Mertens and Liliane Barbe, still live in Belgium, and her older sister Lauren works as a commercial pilot.
