Carlos Alcaraz beat Tommy Paul 6-4, 7-6(2) on Friday, October 30, to reach the Vienna semifinals and set up a meeting with Daniil Medvedev.
The world No. 3 is competing at the Erste Bank Open in Austria this week, with the Swiss Indoors in Basel running separately.
According to the tournament’s official report, Alcaraz saved all five break points during a quarterfinal lasting one hour and 50 minutes on the indoor hard court.
That resistance was the decisive feature of a close contest. Paul created opportunities in both sets but never converted them into a service break.
The American earned three break points early in the opening set. Alcaraz escaped, secured the first break himself and went on to take it 6-4.
Chances remained scarce in the second set, although Paul again threatened first. With neither player breaking through, the match moved into a tiebreak.
Alcaraz established control with two mini-breaks and finished the breaker 7-2. The closing margin reflected his sharper execution when the match reached its decisive phase.
Afterward, the Spaniard credited his willingness to attack on important points. He also acknowledged that Paul offered few openings or easy points throughout the contest.
The result takes Alcaraz into his 50th ATP Tour semifinal, according to the organizer, and matches his last-four appearance on his Vienna debut in 2021.
He has reached this stage without dropping a set, having also beaten Karen Khachanov and Nikoloz Basilashvili earlier in the Austrian tournament this week.
Friday’s victory extends his ATP 500 winning streak to 24 matches. His title-winning campaigns in Doha and Tokyo are part of that sustained success.
Saturday’s opponent brings momentum of his own. Medvedev beat French qualifier Adrian Mannarino 6-2, 6-3, a result also confirmed by the BBC’s Friday scoreboard.
The 2022 Vienna champion secured qualification for the ATP Finals with that victory, adding another reward to a comparatively straightforward passage through the quarterfinals.
Alcaraz leads their head-to-head series 6-3, but Medvedev won their only previous meeting this season in the Indian Wells semifinals, giving Saturday’s rematch added interest.
For Alcaraz, the immediate task is to carry Friday’s resilience into another demanding matchup. His unbeaten week has depended on handling pressure without surrendering sets.
