At first, Woodland attended Washburn University in Topeka with a basketball scholarship. But he left it to attend the University of Kansas in Lawrence. There he played collegiate golf under a scholarship. He won the 2005 Kansas Amateur and was second at the 2006 Western Amateur. He had a successful collegiate golf career with four tournament wins in 3 years.

In 2007, Woodland shifted to professional golf. He played a few Nationwide Tour events in his debut year. Then in December 2008, he earned the PGA Tour 2009 card via placing 11 on Q School.
