Early Life and Tennis Journey

Keys was born in Rock Island, Illinois, to parents who both worked as attorneys. Her father played Division III basketball in college, and neither of her three sisters plays tennis.

She picked up a racket at four after watching Venus Williams play at Wimbledon on television. Her parents promised her a tennis dress like Venus wore if she started playing, and she never really stopped.

At ten, she moved to Florida with her mother to train at the Evert Tennis Academy under John Evert and Chris Evert. She turned professional on her 14th birthday in February 2009.

A few months later she won her WTA Tour debut match, becoming the youngest player to do so since Martina Hingis in 1994.

She cracked the world’s top 100 in 2013 and reached her first major semifinal at the 2015 Australian Open as a teenager.

Professional Tennis Career

Keys won her first title at the 2014 Eastbourne International, upsetting Angelique Kerber in the final. She broke into the top ten in 2016, becoming the first American woman other than Serena Williams to do so since 1999.

In 2017 she reached the US Open final, losing to close friend Sloane Stephens in an all-American showdown. Wrist surgery and injuries slowed her through her late twenties, but she kept grinding out titles in Charleston, Cincinnati, Adelaide, and Strasbourg along the way.

Everything changed at the 2025 Australian Open. Seeded 19th, Keys knocked out world No. 2 Iga Świątek in the semifinals before defeating world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka in a three-set final to claim her first major title.

At 29, she became the oldest first-time women’s Australian Open champion in the Open Era. She has since won an eleventh career title at the 2026 Eastbourne International and reached her career-high ranking of world No. 5.

Coach

Keys is coached by her husband, Bjorn Fratangelo, an American and former ATP top-100 player. Their coaching partnership began in mid-2023, while the two were still dating.

Fratangelo was in her corner for the 2025 Australian Open title run, and the two married in November 2024 after dating since 2017. Before Fratangelo, Keys worked with Georgi Rumenov Payakov starting in 2022.

Husband

Keys married Bjorn Fratangelo, a former professional tennis player, in November 2024. The couple had dated since 2017 before marrying and currently have no children.

Keys is biracial, with a white mother and an African American father, and has described her identity simply as “just me.” She has three sisters, none of whom play competitive tennis.
