Masarova was born to a Spanish mother and a Slovak father in Basel, Switzerland. When she was four, she started playing tennis after watching Roger Federer play his first Wimbledon final. Federer inspired her, so she wanted to emulate his style and success.

Masarova was born in Basel, Switzerland in 1999 to a Slovak father, Peter Masarov, and a Spanish mother, Maria Jose Masarova. She has a younger brother, Daniel.

Her father, a recreational tennis player and Roger Federer fan, taught her four languages: German, English, Spanish, and Slovak.

As a junior, she competed in various tournaments, won several national and regional titles, and was coached by former Swiss tennis star Martina Hingis, who praised her work ethic and potential.


As a junior, Masarova won the French Open title in 2016 and reached the Australian Open final in 2017. In 2016, she reached the Wimbledon semifinals and the US Open junior tournament quarterfinals. 

In 2016, Masarova won the Gstaad Ladies Championship, defeating former world No. 1. She won her first ITF title in Santa Margherita di Pula, Italy. She also reached the semifinals of the WTA 125K series event in Bol, Croatia and two more ITF titles in Hammamet, Tunisia and Grado, Italy.

Masarova moved from Switzerland to Spain in 2018, citing personal and professional reasons. The Spanish Tennis Federation and former Spanish player Conchita Martinez supported her, and she won her fourth ITF title in Monzon, Spain that year. She said she felt more connected to her mother’s country and culture.

Masarova qualified for the US Open main draw in 2021, setting a record for the longest women’s match at the US Open ever. She defeated Ana Bogdan in a thrilling three-setter that lasted four hours and seven minutes. 

When Masarova qualified for the Auckland Open in 2023, she reached her first WTA final. The final was won by Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, Petra Martic, Danielle Collins and Coco Gauff. She also reached her first WTA doubles final with Paula Badosa.

After this tournament, she debuted in the top 100, becoming the third Spanish woman in the top 100 after Garbiñe Muguruza and Sara Sorribes Tormo. She received a wildcard for the main draw of the Dubai Tennis Championships but lost to Aliaksandra Sasnovich in the first round.
