She was born in Bad Saulgau, West Germany, on August 8, 1987. Her father, Heinrich Malek, was a Polish international handball player who was born in Zabrze.

In 2004, she won her first ITF title in Antalya, Turkey. She made her Grand Slam début as a qualifier at the 2005 US Open but lost to Elena Dementieva in the first round.

Tatjana Maria made it to the second round of the Australian Open in 2009, her best Grand Slam result until 2016. She lost to Venus Williams in her first WTA final in 2009 at the Abierto Mexicano Telcel. After taking a break from tennis in 2013, she returned to the tour in 2014. 

In November 2017, she reached the quarterfinals of three WTA tournaments (Nürnberger Versicherungscup, Mallorca Open, and Citi Open), which helped her achieve her career-high singles ranking of 46. She also won two WTA doubles titles with Heather Watson at the Abierto Mexicano Telcel and Olga Savchuk at the Bol Open.

As a singles player, she won the Mallorca Open in 2018 by defeating Anastasija Sevastova. She also reached the quarterfinals of the Wimbledon doubles with Alison Riske. She reached the Hobart International singles and doubles quarterfinals in 2020.
