Boston Common Golf acquired Shane Lowry from The Bay Golf Club on October 19 in TGL’s first trade, according to Field Level Media’s report carried by Reuters.
The move reunites Lowry with Rory McIlroy as the league expands to five-player rosters for 2027, giving Boston an established partnership to draw on for the upcoming season.
As Reuters reported, the transaction brings a major champion into Boston’s lineup. Lowry won The Open in 2019 and captured the Irish Open in September.
The league’s own roster explanation specifies that The Bay receives Boston’s fourth-round selection, a future selection-position swap within three offseasons, and commercial considerations.
The current selection fills The Bay’s open roster spot; the future swap gives it another roster-building option over the next three offseasons.
Lowry’s arrival also changes Boston’s options without changing the number of golfers who compete each night. TGL says teams will still select three players per match.
Those selections will now come from five-player squads rather than four. The expanded pool allows additional combinations and more flexibility around player availability.
Boston’s new pairing already has experience converting familiarity into results. Lowry and McIlroy won the 2024 Zurich Classic of New Orleans together.
The PGA Tour’s account of Boston’s announcement also noted Lowry’s three Ryder Cup appearances, including Europe’s 2023 victory and successful trophy defense in 2025.
In statements included with that announcement, McIlroy welcomed the chance to compete alongside his friend again, highlighting Lowry’s commitment to teammates and quality of play.
Lowry expressed excitement about joining McIlroy and helping Boston pursue a championship. Boston president Mark Lev pointed to his team experience and personality as reasons for optimism.
Keegan Bradley also welcomed the addition, praising Lowry’s all-around game and energy. Those comments establish Boston’s expectations, rather than any guarantee of results.
Lowry joins a franchise that has already experienced contrasting seasons. Golf Digest reported Boston finished last in TGL’s inaugural campaign before topping the 2026 regular-season standings.
That improvement did not produce a title: Jupiter Links Golf Club eliminated Boston in the semifinals, leaving another step between regular-season success and a championship.
The trade is part of a broader roster overhaul across TGL. Motor City Golf Club becomes the seventh team, with Brooks Koepka and Jackson Koivun joining it.
The league says complete five-player rosters will be confirmed October 20. Its upcoming third season begins December 27, with Boston’s opener against Los Angeles scheduled for January 2.
