Gerard Moreno was forced off after just 18 minutes of Villarreal’s LaLiga meeting with Espanyol on Friday, October 30, prompting an early change in attack.
The hosts were still level at 0-0 through the opening hour, with Roberto Fernández’s apparent breakthrough for Espanyol disallowed following a second-half VAR review.
LaLiga’s official match commentary recorded Nicolas Pépé replacing Moreno because of an injury in the 18th minute, cutting short the striker’s appearance at Estadio de la Cerámica.
The substitution confirms an injury-related departure, but the commentary did not identify the nature or severity of the problem. No recovery timetable was established.
Moreno had started alongside Georges Mikautadze in Villarreal’s attack. His early exit left Iñigo Pérez adjusting his forward combination long before the usual substitution window.
Pépé subsequently tested Ángel Fortuño with a left-footed effort in the 55th minute. The Espanyol goalkeeper also stopped Mikautadze as Villarreal sought an opening.
Fortuño had already denied Mikautadze in the first half. At the other end, Péter Gulácsi saved Bryan Zaragoza’s attempt after a pass from Rafel Bauzà.
The game’s most significant scoring intervention came shortly after the restart. Fernández had the ball in the net, but VAR overturned the goal, preserving the deadlock.
Villarreal also introduced Ayoze Pérez for Alberto Moleiro and Carlos Romero for Sergi Cardona around the hour, seeking a different route through the visitors.
Espanyol’s preparations had been dominated by a coaching change. Sergio García took charge on an interim basis while newly appointed head coach Eder Sarabia served a suspension.
The club’s own preview confirmed García’s temporary role. He acknowledged the congested schedule had allowed little time to work with the first team before the trip.
García emphasized collective discipline and unity in his preparations, calling for his players to make Villarreal uncomfortable. Espanyol’s response carried added importance after a difficult run.
The visitors had lost 4-3 to Sestao River in the Copa del Rey on Tuesday. Villarreal entered after a 5-0 cup victory against Manacor.
Before kickoff, Villarreal stood 10th with 12 points from 10 league games, while Espanyol were 18th on eight points, giving both teams clear reasons to seek improvement.
Villarreal also face PSG in the Champions League on Tuesday. Their next opponents arrive after Hakimi’s hat-trick powered a 5-1 win at Le Havre on Friday.
Moreno’s early departure adds a selection question ahead of that European assignment. His availability remains unconfirmed pending further information about the injury that ended his appearance.
