Elias Ymer was born on April 10, 1996, in Skara, Sweden, to Ethiopian immigrant parents. His mother, Kelem, is a doctor, and his father, Wondwosen, works at a dairy company. He began playing tennis at the age of four and was coached by his father until he was 12 years old.

Early Life

Ymer grew up with his parents and two younger brothers, Mikael and Rafael, who all liked to play tennis. When he was four, his parents taught him how to play the sport and pushed him to keep doing what he loved. At the Internazionali di Tennis Città di Vicenza in 2017, Ymer beat Filip Krajinovi in three sets to win his second ATP Challenger title. At the Prosperita Open and the Internazionali di Tennis d’Abruzzo, two more ATP Challenger finals, he lost both times to Laslo Djere.

For the first time in 2018, Ymer reached the second round of a Grand Slam tournament. He did so at the French Open, but Novak Djokovic defeated him there. In June 2018, he achieved his career-high ranking of No. 105.
