About James Duckworth

James Duckworth was born on January 21, 1992, in Sydney.

He began playing tennis at the age of seven and attended Sydney Church of England Grammar School, where he was on the school’s first tennis team from Year 7 and went on to win several AAGPS Premierships.

He was awarded a scholarship to the Australian Institute of Sport, where he was able to develop his tennis abilities further.

Early Life

In December 2005, when he was 13, Duckworth played in his first ITF under-18 tournament. In Perth, Duckworth lost to Sebastian Bell in the first round. In December 2007, Duckworth made his first final in Manila, Philippines, but had to quit in the third set against Francis Casey Alcantara. This was his first big win.


Duckworth turned professional in 2010 and made his ATP main draw debut at the Brisbane International in January 2011, receiving a wildcard. He lost to Florian Mayer in the first round. He then received another wildcard into the Australian Open, where he won his first Grand Slam match against Jarkko Nieminen.

In 2016, Duckworth won his fifth Challenger title by defeating Marco Chiudinelli in Bangkok, Thailand. He also beat Robin Haase to reach the second round of the US Open, his best performance at a Grand Slam tournament, where he lost to Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. He ended the year ranked 101st in the world.

In 2020, Duckworth won his eighth Challenger title by defeating Jay Clarke in Bengaluru, India. He also defeated Jordan Thompson and Lloyd Harris to reach the quarterfinals of the ATP 250 tournament in Adelaide, Australia, where he lost to Andrey Rublev.

Duckworth had a successful 2021 season, winning his ninth Challenger title and reaching the third round of the French Open, where he lost to Rafael Nadal. He also competed for Australia at the Tokyo Olympics, where he defeated Ugo Humbert before losing to Novak Djokovic in the second round. He finished the year ranked 46th in the world.
