For the three nations hosting the 2026 World Cup, the next few weeks are set to be filled with dizzying hope and dread about what might lie in store.
One thing is for certain, though: it will be a thrilling ride for Canada, the United States, and Mexico.
All three countries are coming into the tournament with varying degrees of expectations, but there is confidence that each of them will impress.
That’s reflected in betting market activity, as Canadians who frequently bet on sports back the Canucks, while Americans and Mexicans follow suit for their respective teams.
But how is each host looking prior to the start of the World Cup? And where do they need to improve come Matchday One?
Here’s a closer look at all three nations, and what stage they might hope to reach this summer.
Canada: Defensive Solidity and Knockout Stage Ambitions
Canada is hoping to improve on its performance at the 2022 World Cup, where it was eliminated in the group stages.
Drawn in Group B with Switzerland, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Qatar, there’s faith that the team can not only win their first match at the competition but also reach the Round of 32.
The squad’s form has been promising, with just one loss in its last 10 games, and its defensive solidity has proven to be a major strength.
Canada kept nine clean sheets in 13 matches prior to its pre-tournament friendlies, and Jesse Marsch will be relying on that same compact setup in the group stage.
He might well need to, as goal-scoring has been a slight weakness for Canadian forward Jonathan David since moving to Juventus.
He managed just eight goals in 46 games for the Bianconeri, so he’ll need to rediscover his confidence for Canada to achieve their goal of qualifying for the knockouts.
United States: Pochettino needs to find balance
The USMNT never lacks belief heading into the World Cup, and this year is no different.
There are plenty of expectations surrounding Mauricio Pochettino’s squad, and while there are questions regarding whether the team can handle the pressure, there is no doubt about its quality.
Weston McKennie has been a standout player for Juventus, while Christian Pulisic, Tyler Adams and others offer further quality.
Facing Paraguay, Australia, and Türkiye in Group D, it’s no surprise that the Stars and Stripes are favorites to qualify for the knockout rounds, especially as the team beat Paraguay and Australia in matches last year.
A 3-2 win against Senegal prior to the World Cup will only boost the team’s confidence further, but there are questions surrounding its backline.
The United States has kept just one clean sheet in its last 10 matches – a worrying statistic which could make for some nervy games this summer, particularly in the knockout rounds, should it qualify.
Mexico: The Most Complete Host Nation Heading into 2026?
Javier Aguirre has made it clear prior to the World Cup that he wants Mexico to be a difficult team to face, and warm-up games certainly suggest the squad is on the right track. El Tri is unbeaten in 2026, winning five of its seven matches prior to a final warm-up match against Serbia.
In many ways, the team looks to be the most complete of the host nations, scoring goals consistently while conceding just once in draws against Belgium and Portugal.
Considered favorites in Group A ahead of South Africa, South Korea, and Czechia, there’s a chance that Mexico could reach the quarterfinals for the first time since 1986, when it last hosted the World Cup.
That, however, will depend on whether Mexico’s creators show up this summer. Although the team has beaten Ghana and Australia in warm-up games, it did so by narrow margins, with the latter creating more big chances than Aguirre’s side when the two met.
Should Mexico reach the Round of 32, then it will need the likes of Brian Gutierrez and Álvaro Fidalgo to conjure chances that Raúl Jiménez can take.
