France has won the FIFA World Cup twice, in 1998 on home soil and in 2018 in Russia, but their story goes far deeper than two triumphant finals.
Les Bleus have appeared in 17 World Cups, reached four finals, and produced some of the tournament’s most iconic moments:
Just Fontaine’s record 13 goals in 1958, Zinedine Zidane’s two headers in the 1998 final, Kylian Mbappé becoming the second teenager ever to score in a World Cup final.
This guide covers every France World Cup appearance since 1930, the three golden eras that shaped Les Bleus, their individual and team records, and what to expect at 2026.
France at the FIFA World Cup: Complete History (1930 to 2026)
France have appeared at 17 World Cups since the inaugural 1930 tournament. They failed to qualify five times (1962, 1970, 1974, 1990, 1994) and withdrew from the 1950 edition.
Since 1998, they have qualified for every tournament and reached the final four times.

How Many Times Has France Won the World Cup?
France has won the FIFA World Cup twice: 1998 and 2018.
In 1998, hosting the tournament gave Les Bleus a clear advantage. Home crowds, no travel, and a favorable draw. The final at the Stade de France became one of the most lopsided in history.
Zidane headed in two corners before half-time. Emmanuel Petit added a third in stoppage time. Brazil, the defending champions and heavy favorites, lost 3-0. Fabien Barthez conceded just two goals across all seven matches.
Twenty years later, France won it again in Russia with a completely different kind of squad. Deeper, younger, and more relentless.
Mbappé scored four goals at 19, becoming only the second teenager after Pelé to score in a World Cup final. The 4-2 win over Croatia remains the highest-scoring World Cup final since 1966.
Didier Deschamps captained the 1998 side and managed the 2018 team. Only Mario Zagallo and Franz Beckenbauer had done the same before him.
France’s World Cup Finals Record
France has reached the final four times in 25 years. Two wins, two penalty shootout losses.
| Year | Opponent | Result | Key Moment |
| 1998 | Brazil | Won 3-0 | Zidane 2 headers; Barthez 5 clean sheets |
| 2006 | Italy | Lost on pens (1-1 AET) | Zidane red card in extra time; Trezeguet missed penalty |
| 2018 | Croatia | Won 4-2 | Mbappé teenage milestone; first own goal in a final |
| 2022 | Argentina | Lost on pens (3-3 AET) | Mbappé hat-trick; considered the greatest final ever played |
Both losses came in extra time, both decided by penalties. In 2006, Zidane was sent off for headbutting Marco Materazzi, the final act of his career.
In 2022, Mbappé scored a hat-trick including two goals in the last ten minutes of normal time to pull France from 2-0 down, yet it still wasn’t enough.
France’s Three Golden Eras
France’s World Cup history falls into three distinct periods, each built around a generational player.
The Platini Era (1982, 1986)
The carré magique of Platini, Tigana, Giresse, and Fernández gave France their first genuine World Cup threat.
In 1982, they reached the semi-final and led West Germany 3-1 in extra time before collapsing and losing on penalties in what many still call the greatest match in World Cup history.
Third place in 1986 followed, with Michel Platini leading a squad that again fell to West Germany, this time 2-0 in the semis.
France won nothing at the World Cup during this era, but the Platini generation proved Les Bleus could compete with anyone on the planet.
The Zidane Era (1998, 2002, 2006)
The 1998 title was the peak. Zidane missed two group games through suspension yet still dominated the knockout rounds, and came back eight years later to win the Golden Ball at age 33.
Between those bookends, 2002 was an embarrassment: defending champions France lost to Senegal in the opening match and were eliminated without scoring a goal.
The 2006 run was remarkable given how little anyone expected from an aging squad. Zidane came out of international retirement, dragged France through the knockouts, won player of the tournament, then was sent off in the final.
His World Cup story ended with a red card and a loss on penalties.
The Deschamps Era (2014 to Present)
Deschamps took charge in 2012 after France’s disastrous 2010 World Cup, where a player revolt led to a training ground strike.
By 2018 he had built something different: no ego, no hierarchy, just a system that got the best from Mbappé, Griezmann, Pogba, and Lloris simultaneously.
The 2022 campaign showed the depth of that squad. Despite losing Benzema, Pogba, and Kanté to injury before the tournament even started, France reached the final again. Mbappé finished as top scorer with eight goals.
Hugo Lloris became the FIFA World Cup record holder for most matches played by a goalkeeper across his career.
France’s World Cup Records and Milestones
Individual records:
- Just Fontaine scored 13 goals at the 1958 World Cup in Sweden, the all-time record for goals in a single tournament. He averaged more than two per game across six matches, scoring in borrowed boots after damaging his own in training. The record has stood for 67 years.
- Kylian Mbappé became the second teenager to score in a World Cup final in 2018, after Pelé in 1958. In 2022 he became only the third player to score a hat-trick in a final, joining Geoff Hurst (1966).
- Hugo Lloris holds the FIFA World Cup record for most matches played by a goalkeeper.
- Fabien Barthez shares the record for most clean sheets at a World Cup, alongside England’s Peter Shilton.
- Didier Deschamps is one of three people to win the World Cup as both player and coach, alongside Mario Zagallo and Franz Beckenbauer.
Team records:
- France is one of only eight nations to have won the FIFA World Cup.
- One of six nations to have won it more than once.
- Four final appearances since 1998, putting them alongside Brazil and Germany as the most consistent finalists of the modern era.
- First team since Brazil in 1958 and 1962 to reach back-to-back finals (2018 and 2022).
France at the 2026 FIFA World Cup
The 2026 World Cup is hosted across the United States, Canada, and Mexico, the first to feature 48 teams instead of 32. France qualified through UEFA and enter as one of the tournament favorites.
Mbappé will be 27 by kick-off, squarely in his prime and chasing his first winners’ medal as captain.
A third World Cup title would place France alongside Germany and Brazil as the only three-time winners in history.
Deschamps remains as manager, giving Les Bleus continuity that few elite nations can match.
If the last 25 years taught anyone anything, it’s that writing France off never ends well.
